Veenivähenduses

Veenivähenduses, also known as venous insufficiency, is a medical condition characterized by the impaired circulation of blood in the veins, particularly in the legs. This condition arises when the valves within the veins, which are responsible for preventing blood from flowing backward, become damaged or weakened. As a result, blood can pool in the veins, leading to increased pressure and a variety of symptoms.

The prevalence of veenivähenduses increases with age and is more common in women. Risk factors include a family history of the condition, obesity, prolonged standing or sitting, pregnancy, and previous blood clots. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include leg pain, aching, heaviness, and fatigue. Swelling, particularly in the ankles and feet, is a common sign, as are visible varicose veins or spider veins. In more advanced stages, skin changes such as discoloration, eczema, and even venous ulcers can develop.

Diagnosis of veenivähenduses typically involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. An ultrasound (duplex scan) is often used to assess blood flow and the condition of the vein valves. Treatment strategies aim to improve circulation and manage symptoms. These can include lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, weight management, and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting. Compression stockings are frequently recommended to provide external pressure that aids blood return to the heart. In some cases, medication to improve vein tone or procedures like sclerotherapy or endovenous ablation may be considered to close or remove affected veins. Early diagnosis and management are important to prevent complications.
