Varmedringer, also known as heat waves, are prolonged periods of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity, especially in oceanic climate countries. They are measured relative to the usual weather in the area and define periods of abnormally high temperatures, more than the normal maximum temperature that is measured during the summer season in that area. The term is usually applied only when the flow of warm air along the Earth's surface is interrupted, causing the warm air to settle over a particular area; thus, varmedringer are generally stationary weather systems.
