Valuprosessit, or casting processes, are manufacturing methods for producing metal components by melting metal and pouring it into a mold where it solidifies to take the desired shape. Casting is valued for its ability to create complex geometries, varying wall thicknesses, and near-net-shape parts, often at lower tooling costs for small to medium production runs.

The main categories of valuprosessit include sand casting, investment casting (lost-wax), shell mold casting, plaster mold casting, and permanent-mold or die casting. Gravity casting relies on gravity to fill the mold, while pressure casting uses applied pressure to fill and pack the metal; centrifugal casting uses rotation to distribute molten metal. Mold materials range from sand and ceramic to metal in various molding techniques, influencing surface finish, tolerances, and production speed.

Typical operations involve melting the metal in a furnace, preparing the mold or pattern, pouring the molten metal, allowing solidification, removing the casting, and performing finishing and inspection. Common defects to control include porosity, shrinkage cavities, cold shuts, and misruns. Designers and foundries use gating systems, risers, chills, and precise temperature control to manage solidification and quality.
