It is designed for 64-bit x86 hardware and uses the same Ubuntu base, package management (dpkg and apt), and release model as Ubuntu. The project aims to provide a clean 64-bit environment with current software while preserving Ubuntu's ecosystem and compatibility with Ubuntu repositories. Note that it is not an official Canonical product.

Development is led by volunteers and mirrors the Ubuntu source tree, but it is not endorsed by Canonical. As a result, release timelines, default configurations, and available images may differ from official Ubuntu flavors. Security updates, while aligned with Ubuntu practices, depend on the activity of the maintainers and community volunteers.

Typical characteristics include a 64-bit kernel and userspace, access to Ubuntu repositories via apt, and support for common desktop environments chosen by the build, such as GNOME or KDE variants. Some builds may integrate alternative performance enhancements or privacy defaults, but the project generally strives to remain compatible with software available for Ubuntu.

Availability and reception: Ubuntu64 has limited adoption compared with official Ubuntu releases. It serves as a testing ground for users who want a strictly 64-bit experience or who wish to experiment with newer optimizations. Installation images are distributed through community mirrors and documentation is maintained on community wikis and forums, where users can seek help from fellow enthusiasts.

Hardware support is focused on modern 64-bit processors; 32-bit hardware is not supported. As a non-official derivative, users are advised to verify compatibility with their hardware and to back up data before testing.
