Tähelepanul, also known as "attention-seeking" in English, refers to the act of drawing attention to oneself, often through deliberate or exaggerated behavior. This concept is commonly discussed in the context of social interactions, parenting, and behavioral psychology. The term originates from Estonian, where "tähele" means "attention" and "panul" implies the action of seeking or directing it.

In social psychology, attention-seeking behavior can manifest in various ways, such as seeking validation, praise, or sympathy from others. It may include behaviors like talking excessively, displaying emotional outbursts, or engaging in activities that guarantee reactions from those around them. While some attention-seeking behaviors are harmless, they can sometimes indicate underlying issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety, or a desire for social connection.

In parenting and child development, the term is often used to describe behaviors in children that aim to gain parental attention, whether positive or negative. For example, a child might cry, throw a tantrum, or act out to ensure they are noticed. Parents and caregivers often address this by setting clear boundaries, providing consistent responses, and reinforcing positive behaviors to encourage healthier ways of seeking attention.

Critics argue that labeling behavior as "tähelepanul" can sometimes oversimplify complex emotional needs. Instead, understanding the root cause—such as loneliness, insecurity, or unmet needs—can lead to more constructive solutions.
