Tulkkausta

Tulkkaus refers to the act or service of converting spoken language from one language to another in real time, enabling communication between people who do not share a common language. Simultaneous tulkkaus involves the interpreter translating as the speaker talks, typically in a soundproof booth with equipment; it is common at large conferences and international events. Consecutive tulkkaus proceeds in segments, with the speaker pausing to allow the interpreter to render the message in the target language. Whispered tulkkaus, or chuchotage, is a one-to-one form without equipment, used for small groups. Sign language tulkkaus covers interpreting between spoken language and sign languages, and is essential for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Interpreting requires specialized training and professional standards. Interpreters commit to confidentiality, impartiality, accuracy, and cultural mediation. They may work independently, through agencies, or within public institutions.
