Soundproofing refers to techniques and materials used to reduce sound transmission between spaces. The goal is to lower noise levels through walls, floors, ceilings, doors, and other barriers. Soundproofing does not create perfect silence, but it can significantly limit noise transfer.

The core approaches are often described as mass, damping, decoupling, sealing, and absorption. Mass adds inertia to a barrier; damping converts vibrational energy to heat; decoupling separates structural elements to interrupt transmission; sealing closes gaps around joints and penetrations; absorption reduces reverberation inside a space.

Performance is quantified by standards such as the Sound Transmission Class (STC) for airborne noise, and the Impact Isolation Class (IIC) for impact sounds; absorption is measured by NRC. Higher STC or IIC values indicate greater reduction, but results depend on frequency and construction.

Practical considerations include locations of weak points—doors, windows, outlets, and service penetrations—as well as the need for continuous barriers and proper installation. Common materials and methods are layered drywall, mineral wool or mass-loaded vinyl, resilient channels, decoupled framing, sealed joints, and floating floors.

Soundproofing contrasts with sound absorption, which reduces internal reflections and echoes but does not prevent sound from entering or leaving a space. Marketing claims of total soundproofing are often overstated; effective performance requires addressing all transmission paths.

Applications encompass residential buildings, recording studios, theaters, offices, hospitals, and industrial settings, where reducing noise improves comfort, privacy, or intelligibility.
