Trrhog

Trrhog is a fictional mammal described in the highland folklore and field guides of the Avalorian region. It is portrayed as a medium-sized, nocturnal forager adapted to forested montane habitats. The name allegedly derives from the local Highlands language, combining terms for shadow and fur to reflect its elusive, camouflaged appearance.

Description: Adults measure 70–95 cm in body length with a 25–40 cm tail. They have a stocky frame, a dense two-layer coat of brown-gray fur, a rounded snout, and small eyes suited to night vision. Limbs are strong, with broad claws for digging and climbing. A short dorsal crest along the neck can be raised when threatened.

Habitat and ecology: Trrhog favors cool, damp montane forests at mid-elevations, often near streams and rocky outcrops. It is primarily nocturnal and omnivorous, feeding on roots, tubers, insects, small vertebrates, and carrion. It relies on tactile whiskers and a sensitive snout for navigation, and uses low-frequency vocalizations to communicate at night.

Behavior and reproduction: Trrhog is largely solitary outside the mating season. Breeding occurs in late winter, with a gestation of about 60–70 days, producing litters of one or two altricial young. Young stay with the mother for several months to learn digging and foraging before seeking independence.

Relationship to humans and status: In Avalorian folklore the Trrhog is regarded as a shy omen of seasonal change and is rarely seen by outsiders. Some communities advocate protecting its forest habitat, while researchers note that limited sightings complicate assessments of its conservation status.
