Towdriven

Towdriven refers to a type of vehicle or vehicle system where the primary means of propulsion is derived from being towed by another vehicle. This concept is often applied in specific industrial, agricultural, or specialized logistical scenarios. In a basic form, a towdriven system might involve a trailer or cart that is pulled by a tractor or other prime mover. The towed unit relies entirely on the pulling force of the tow vehicle for movement, and typically contains its own cargo or operational components.

More advanced applications of towdriven technology can be found in automated guided vehicles (AGVs) or in certain types of industrial trains. These systems often consist of a lead vehicle that provides the motive power, and a series of unpowered, or passively powered, trailers that follow in a convoy. The steering and braking of the towed units may be integrated with the lead vehicle, or they may operate semi-autonomously.

The advantages of towdriven systems can include reduced capital expenditure compared to self-propelled units for each component, simplified design of the towed elements, and potential for high carrying capacity through the use of multiple trailers. However, they are inherently dependent on the tow vehicle and can face challenges with maneuverability in tight spaces or with precise positioning. Examples include airport baggage tugs pulling carts, forklifts towing loads, or automated warehouse systems that move multiple carts sequentially.
