A Torque Vectoring System (TVS) is a mechanical or electronic device designed to actively distribute power between driven wheels of a vehicle, primarily to enhance traction, stability, and handling. This technology is commonly employed in all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles.

Conventional AWD and 4WD systems typically rely on mechanical or electronic controls to distribute power between the front and rear axles. In contrast, a Torque Vectoring System takes this concept further by directing power between individual wheels. This allows for precise control over the distribution of torque, enabling improved cornering performance, reduced understeer, and enhanced stability during acceleration and braking.

TVS systems often incorporate advanced sensors and computer algorithms to monitor and adjust the torque distribution in real-time, based on factors such as vehicle speed, steering angle, throttle input, and wheel slip. This instantaneous feedback enables the system to dynamically allocate power between the driven wheels, thereby optimizing traction and stability.

Types of Torque Vectoring Systems include electronic differential locks (EDLs), torque vectoring differentials (TVDs), and electronically-controlled limited-slip differentials (ECLSDs). EDLs and TVDs are commonly used in performance-oriented vehicles, while ECLSDs are more commonly employed in SUVs and passenger cars.

While Torque Vectoring Systems offer several benefits, they can also introduce additional complexity and cost to a vehicle's drivetrain. Despite these factors, TVS technology has gained popularity in recent years due to its potential to enhance vehicle handling and towing capabilities.
