Tokyoarea is a term used to describe the contiguous metropolitan region surrounding Tokyo Metropolis in Japan. It is an informal geographic concept rather than an official political unit, and its boundaries vary by definition. Commonly, Tokyoarea includes Tokyo Metropolis and parts of neighboring Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures, with some definitions extending into Yamanashi and Shizuoka.

Geography and urban form: The area sits on the Kantō Plain along Tokyo Bay, and its core is a dense urban corridor that radiates outward from central Tokyo. The landscape combines high-density city centers with suburban towns, river and coastal zones, and a network of airports, ports, and rail links.

Demographics: The Tokyoarea contains one of the world's largest metropolitan populations. Estimates commonly place the population around 37 million, though the figure depends on the exact boundaries used.

Economy: It is a global economic hub, with finance, services, manufacturing, and technology concentrated in Tokyo's wards and in adjacent cities such as Yokohama, Kawasaki, and Chiba. The region hosts numerous corporate headquarters and international trade infrastructure.

Transportation: The region is served by an extensive rail network, including JR East, Tokyo Metro, and private lines, along with three major road arteries. Haneda and Narita airports within the area handle international and domestic traffic.

Culture and education: The Tokyoarea hosts renowned universities, museums, theaters, and cultural districts. Institutions such as the University of Tokyo, Keio University, and Waseda University anchor higher education, while countless cultural events reflect the area's diversity.

Governance and planning: As an informal concept, Tokyoarea has no single government. Policy coordination typically occurs among Tokyo Metropolis and the surrounding prefectures, with national agencies guiding regional development and infrastructure.
