Toimingusüsteemid, commonly referred to as operating systems, are fundamental software programs that manage computer hardware and software resources. They act as an intermediary between the user and the computer's hardware, providing a platform for applications to run. Key functions of an operating system include process management, memory management, file system management, and device management. Process management involves scheduling and controlling the execution of various programs. Memory management ensures that each process has access to the necessary memory space without interfering with others. The file system organizes and stores data on storage devices, while device management handles input and output operations for peripherals.

Operating systems can be broadly categorized into single-user and multi-user systems. Single-user systems are designed for one user at a time, such as early versions of MS-DOS or personal computer operating systems like Windows and macOS. Multi-user systems, on the other hand, allow multiple users to access and utilize the computer's resources simultaneously, commonly found in servers and mainframe computers, with examples including Linux and Unix variants. Real-time operating systems (RTOS) are a specialized type designed for applications that require immediate response to events, often used in embedded systems and industrial control.

The user interface is another crucial aspect of an operating system, providing a means for users to interact with the computer. This can be a command-line interface (CLI), where users type commands, or a graphical user interface (GUI), which uses icons, windows, and menus for visual interaction. Popular examples of modern operating systems include Microsoft Windows, Apple's macOS, Google's Android, and various distributions of Linux. Each has its own strengths and target audience, contributing to the diverse landscape of computing.
