Multiuser refers to computer systems, software, or environments that permit multiple distinct users to access and use resources concurrently. In operating systems, multiuser capability means the OS supports separate user accounts, authentication, and session management so that each user can log in, run programs, and store data independently, while sharing CPU time, memory, and I/O devices.

Historically, time-sharing systems enabled several users to interact with a single computer at the same time, shaping the development of multiuser computing. Modern multiuser environments exist in both desktop and server contexts. Unix-like systems, Linux, BSD, macOS, and Windows Server provide multiuser capabilities, as do mainframe and enterprise systems. Many applications, including database management systems and cloud platforms, also operate in multiuser modes, allowing concurrent access by multiple clients or users.

Key concepts include user accounts and authentication, access control, and permissions that determine what resources a user may read, write, or execute. Isolation between users is important for privacy and security, as is auditing and accountability. Resource management techniques, such as process scheduling, quotas, and virtualization or containerization, help ensure fair use of CPU, memory, and storage.
