Tinapinnoitteen

Tinapinnoitteen, a Finnish term often translated as tin plating or tin coating, refers to a thin layer of tin applied to the surface of another metal. This process is primarily used to protect the underlying metal from corrosion and to improve its solderability. Tin is a relatively soft, malleable, and corrosion-resistant metal, making it an ideal choice for protective coatings.

The tin plating process can be carried out using various methods, including electroplating, hot-dip tinning, and mechanical plating. Electroplating involves immersing the object to be plated in an electrolyte solution containing tin ions and passing an electric current through it, causing the tin to deposit onto the surface. Hot-dip tinning is a more traditional method where the metal object is dipped into a bath of molten tin. Mechanical plating, also known as peening, uses a tumbling action to embed tin particles onto the substrate.

Tin coatings are widely used in many industries. In the electronics industry, tin plating is essential for protecting copper traces on printed circuit boards and for ensuring reliable solder joints. In the food and beverage industry, tin-plated steel cans, often referred to as tin cans, are used for packaging due to tin's non-toxic nature and resistance to corrosion from food acids.
