Immersing is the act of submerging something in a liquid or enclosing it completely within a surrounding medium. In everyday language, it can also refer to becoming deeply involved or absorbed in an activity or setting. The verb form is immerse, and immersing is the present participle used to describe ongoing action.

In physical contexts, immersing an object in a liquid is common in cooking, cleaning, manufacturing, and laboratory work. Buoyancy, density, and surface interactions determine how the object behaves underwater or under solvent conditions. Immersion can affect heat transfer, chemical reactions, and corrosion, and it is often controlled by conditions such as temperature, duration, and agitation. Safety considerations include drowning risk, hypothermia, and exposure to hazardous substances.

In education, language immersion programs expose students to a target language through instruction and daily activities, with the aim of achieving functional proficiency. Models range from full immersion, where most or all instruction is in the target language, to partial or dual-language immersion. Research reports varying outcomes, but generally show improvements in language competence and sometimes cognitive benefits, with potential trade-offs in early attainment in non-language subjects without adequate support.

Immersion is also used in psychology and technology. In exposure therapy, immersive environments or simulations are used to elicit controlled anxiety responses for treatment. In media and computing, the term describes experiences that give a strong sense of presence, such as virtual reality, 360-degree video, or richly designed interactive environments, often aiming to minimize awareness of the surrounding interface.
