Thiruvonam

Thiruvonam is the principal day of the Onam festival in Kerala, India. It is observed on the tenth day of the Malayalam month of Chingam, which typically falls in August or September. The day commemorates the annual homecoming of the legendary king Mahabali and the celebration of his benevolent rule.

On Thiruvonam, households traditionally create pookkalam, or flower carpets, in front of their homes. In the evening, families gather for a festive vegetarian feast called Onam Sadya, served on banana leaves. People wear traditional attire, such as kasavu sarees and mundu, and communities stage cultural programs and games while visiting relatives and neighbors.

The festival's origin lies in the myth of King Mahabali and the Vamana avatar of the god Vishnu. According to the legend, Vamana asks for three paces of land; Mahabali agrees, and Vamana grows to cosmic size to measure the earth and heavens. With the third step, Mahabali offers his head, and Vishnu grants him permission to return to his people annually, which is celebrated as Onam on Thiruvonam.

Thiruvonam is widely observed throughout Kerala and by Malayali communities abroad. While the main rituals are household-based, public events, boat races, and temple performances also reflect the festival's spirit. The day emphasizes harvest celebrations, hospitality, and social harmony.
