Malayali

Malayali, also spelled Malayalee, refers to an ethnolinguistic group native to the Indian state of Kerala and adjacent regions. The term typically denotes people who speak Malayalam as their first language. Malayalis comprise the majority of Kerala's population and form a sizable global diaspora.

Language and script: Malayalam is a Dravidian language with its own script. It features multiple regional dialects and is one of India's 22 scheduled languages. It is the official language of Kerala and is used by Malayali communities abroad.

Culture and society: Malayali culture encompasses a long literary tradition and a thriving film industry (often called Mollywood). Classical dance forms such as Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, as well as martial arts like Kalaripayattu, are part of its heritage. Major festivals include Onam and Vishu. Kerala cuisine centers on rice, coconut, seafood, and vegetables, with regional variations.

Diaspora and identity: Large Malayali communities are found in Gulf countries—especially the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar—as well as in North America, Europe, and Australia. The term Malayali emphasizes language and regional origin, though Kerala’s people include Hindu, Muslim (Mappila), and Christian communities with diverse practices.
