Tavaratila

Tavaratila is a Finnish term used to describe a storage space or cargo area intended for goods. The word is formed from tavara, meaning goods, and tila, meaning space. It is commonly used in everyday language to refer to the luggage compartment of a vehicle, but it can also denote storage spaces in ships, airplanes, buildings, or other contexts where goods are kept.

In automotive usage, tavaratila refers to the vehicle’s cargo space, typically located behind the rear seats and accessible via a hatch or tailgate. The capacity is usually expressed in liters and varies by body type, such as hatchbacks, sedans, estates, or SUVs. The space can often be increased by folding the rear seats or removing a floor panel to reveal a spare wheel well. Features commonly associated with tavaratila include floor coverings, tie-down hooks, cargo nets, a retractable cargo cover, and sometimes a reversible floor or storage compartments beneath the floor.

Beyond cars, the term also appears in logistics and transport to indicate the cargo hold or storage compartment of ships, trucks, or airplanes, as well as in warehouses or storage facilities to describe areas designated for goods. While its primary association is with vehicles, tavaratila remains a general reference to any dedicated space used for storing or transporting items.
