Tarekontrollen

Tarekontrollen refers to the set of procedures and systems used to determine and verify the tare weight—the empty weight of packaging, containers, pallets, or other handling aids—so that only the product’s net weight is measured and recorded. The concept is central to accurate weighing in logistics, manufacturing, and retail, where packaging can otherwise distort reported weights.

The purpose of tarekontrollen is to ensure measurement accuracy, support fair trade, and enable correct pricing, invoicing, inventory management, and quality control. The scope covers both prepackaged goods and goods loaded into containers or pallets, and it often involves automated scales, handheld devices, or weighbridges equipped with tare data.

Key components include the weighing instrument, a tare database or memory for known container weights, calibration and verification routines, and software that calculates net weight by subtracting tare from gross weight. Procedures typically involve determining a container’s tare weight when empty, applying tare data to subsequent measurements, and documenting results to maintain traceability to national or international standards.

Standards and compliance are governed by national metrology institutes and international guidelines. Instruments are regularly verified and calibrated, and tare values are kept up to date to ensure traceability to reference standards. Legal-for-trade requirements may apply in certain sectors, necessitating documented procedures and auditable records.
