Tannlegen

Tannlegen is the definite form of the Norwegian term for a dentist, the primary oral health professional responsible for diagnosing, preventing, and treating diseases and conditions of the teeth, gums, and surrounding structures. The profession encompasses clinical care, patient education, and coordination of treatment with specialists when needed.

Education and licensure: Dentists are trained in university-level dental programs that typically last five to six years and lead to a professional degree. After graduation, licensure is granted by the national or regional regulatory authority, often contingent on passing examinations and meeting continuing‑education requirements. Many dentists also pursue postgraduate specialization in areas such as endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, or oral surgery.

Practice: Dentists work in private clinics, public health services, hospitals, and teaching clinics. Core activities include examinations, preventive care (cleaning and fluoridation), restorations (fillings, crowns), root canal treatment, extractions, placement of implants and dentures, radiographic imaging, anesthesia or sedation, and emergency care. They develop treatment plans, perform procedures, and provide patient education on oral hygiene and disease prevention.

Regulation and collaboration: Dentists adhere to infection control standards, maintain patient records, and obtain informed consent. They often work as part of a care team that includes dental hygienists and dental assistants and may collaborate with specialists in orthodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics.
