Tangfødsel, also known as forceps delivery, is an obstetric procedure where specialized instruments called forceps are used to assist in the birth of a baby. This intervention is typically employed when there are concerns about the baby's well-being during labor or when maternal effort is insufficient to progress the delivery. Forceps are designed with curved blades that fit around the baby's head, allowing the obstetrician to gently guide and pull the infant out of the birth canal.

The decision to use forceps is made by a qualified medical professional based on a careful assessment of the situation. Indications for forceps delivery can include fetal distress, such as a slowing heart rate, or prolonged second stage of labor, where pushing has not resulted in the baby's descent. Maternal factors, such as exhaustion or certain medical conditions, may also contribute to the need for this procedure.

While generally safe when performed by experienced practitioners, forceps delivery carries some risks for both the mother and the baby. Potential complications for the mother can include vaginal or cervical tears, or in rare cases, bladder or bowel injury.
