TamperEvidentFlags

TamperEvidentFlags are indicators designed to reveal that an object or system has been accessed or altered without authorization. The term covers both physical indicators used on goods and packaging and digital indicators embedded in software, hardware, or data systems. TamperEvidentFlags are intended to support tamper detection, auditing, and accountability across supply chains and IT environments.

Physical tamper-evident flags include seals, tapes, labels with VOID patterns, temperature-sensitive indicators, and destructible threads. These elements are designed to show visible evidence of opening or manipulation, and are commonly used on pharmaceutical packaging, consumer electronics, and critical devices. Some TEFs also incorporate unique serial numbers or RFID tags to enable tracking and verification.

Digital tamper-evident flags include cryptographic signatures, hash chains, append-only logs, and secure attestation mechanisms. In software and firmware, code signing and secure boot attestations function as digital TEFs by enabling verification that code has not been altered since signing. In data storage and cloud environments, tamper-evident logs and blockchain-inspired data structures provide end-to-end integrity and traceability.

TEFs are most effective when combined with process controls, regular inspections, and independent audit trails. They can help detect unauthorized changes, deter tampering, and support incident response. However, TEFs have limitations: sophisticated adversaries may bypass seals or forge cryptographic artifacts; false positives can occur due to environmental factors; and cost or operational overhead may be nontrivial.
