Süsinikkiududel, also known as carbon fiber, is a material composed of extremely thin fibers, about 5 to 10 micrometers in diameter, and composed mostly of carbon atoms. These fibers are incredibly strong and stiff, making them ideal for applications where high strength-to-weight ratio is crucial. The carbon atoms are bonded together in crystals that are aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber. This alignment enhances the strength and rigidity of the material.

The production of süsinikkiududel involves a complex process of heating organic polymers, such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN), in the absence of air. This process, known as carbonization, removes non-carbon atoms and results in the formation of long, strong carbon chains. This composite, often referred to as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), combines the desirable properties of carbon fiber with the moldability of the resin.
