Sömnsfällor refers to common behaviors or environmental factors that disrupt healthy sleep patterns, leading to difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restorative sleep. These are often unintentional habits that individuals develop, believing they are conducive to rest or simply unaware of their negative impact.

Common sömnsfällor include irregular sleep schedules, where bedtime and wake-up times vary significantly between weekdays and weekends. This can confuse the body's natural circadian rhythm. Excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption close to bedtime is another significant sömnsfälla, as these substances interfere with sleep onset and quality. Similarly, heavy meals late at night can cause discomfort and indigestion, making sleep difficult.

The use of electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, before bed is a prevalent sömnsfälla. The blue light emitted from these screens can suppress melatonin production, a hormone crucial for sleep. An uncomfortable sleep environment, including a room that is too hot, too cold, too bright, or too noisy, can also act as a sömnsfälla. Lack of physical activity during the day can contribute to poor sleep, while excessive exercise too close to bedtime can be overstimulating. Finally, worrying or ruminating about daily stressors in bed can create a negative association with the sleep environment, turning the bed into a place of anxiety rather than rest.
