Säiliöbioreaktorit, or tank bioreactors, are vessels designed for biological reactions to occur under controlled conditions. These reactors are commonly used in various industries, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage production, and environmental engineering. The fundamental principle behind a tank bioreactor is to provide a sterile and optimal environment for microorganisms, cells, or enzymes to carry out specific biological processes.

These bioreactors typically consist of a closed container, often made of stainless steel or glass, equipped with systems for agitation, aeration, temperature control, and pH monitoring. Agitation ensures uniform distribution of nutrients and cells, as well as efficient gas transfer. Aeration, usually achieved through sparging, supplies essential oxygen for aerobic processes. Temperature and pH control are crucial for maintaining the viability and activity of the biological agents. Sensors are integrated to continuously monitor these parameters, and feedback control systems adjust them as needed.

Different types of tank bioreactors exist, categorized by their mode of operation, such as batch, fed-batch, and continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR). Batch reactors are filled with all necessary components at the start of the process and run until completion. Fed-batch reactors allow for the gradual addition of nutrients or removal of byproducts during the process, extending the reaction time and increasing product yield. CSTRs operate continuously, with a constant inflow of fresh medium and outflow of product-laden medium, maintaining a steady state. The choice of bioreactor depends on the specific application, the organism or cell type, and the desired product.
