Syyhypunkki, scientifically known as Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, is a microscopic mite that causes the highly contagious skin condition scabies. These eight-legged arthropods burrow into the upper layer of the skin, where the female mite lays her eggs. The mites feed on skin cells and fluids. The burrowing and the mite's waste products trigger an intense itching sensation and an allergic reaction in many individuals, leading to the characteristic rash of scabies.

Scabies is spread through direct, prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. It is not typically spread through brief contact, such as a handshake. While scabies can affect anyone, it is more common in crowded conditions, such as nursing homes, prisons, and childcare centers, where close contact is frequent. Animals can carry their own types of scabies mites, but these mites generally do not infest humans or cause a lasting infection if they do.

The primary symptom of scabies is intense itching, which is often worse at night. This itching can be accompanied by a pimple-like rash, tiny blisters, or small, raised burrows on the skin. These lesions are most commonly found on the hands, wrists, elbows, armpits, waistline, and genitals. Diagnosis is usually made based on the characteristic symptoms and a physical examination of the skin. Microscopic examination of skin scrapings to identify the mite, its eggs, or fecal matter can confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment for scabies involves prescription topical medications called scabicides, which kill the mites. These are typically applied to the entire body from the neck down and left on for a specified period. Oral medication is also available for severe infestations or when topical treatments are not effective. It is crucial to treat all household members and close contacts simultaneously, even if they show no symptoms, to prevent reinfestation. Cleaning and drying contaminated clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water and high heat is also essential.
