Systematiseren

Systematiseren is the process of organizing elements within a domain into a coherent, ordered system by applying predefined structures, rules, and procedures. The term is Dutch, derived from systeem (system) and -iseren (to make or turn into). In practice, systematiseren aims to improve efficiency, consistency, transparency, and predictability by reducing ad hoc decisions and enabling reproducible results.

Common strategies include analyzing goals, identifying components and relationships, classifying and naming elements (taxonomy), standardizing processes, documenting procedures, and designing modular workflows. Tools such as process maps, flowcharts, templates, checklists, metadata schemas, and standard operating instructions support systematiseren. Where appropriate, automation and information systems are used to enforce rules and capture data for auditing and improvement.

Systematiseren is applied in many domains: in business, for process optimization and knowledge management; in information management, for data governance and cataloging; in education, for curriculum design and assessment alignment; in public administration, for form standardization and service delivery. The practice tends to follow a cycle of analysis, design, implementation, and review, often incorporating continuous improvement methods like PDCA or Kaizen.
