Systemüberlastungen, also known as system overloads or resource exhaustion, occur when a computer system or network is subjected to a workload that exceeds its capacity to process it efficiently. This can manifest in various ways, including significant performance degradation, unresponsiveness, or complete system failure. The root causes are diverse and can stem from software issues, hardware limitations, or network congestion.

Software-related overloads might arise from inefficient algorithms, memory leaks, or runaway processes that consume excessive CPU time or memory. Inadequate programming practices can lead to resource contention, where multiple processes vie for limited resources, causing bottlenecks. On the hardware side, insufficient processing power, limited RAM, or slow storage can become critical bottlenecks when faced with high demand. Network overloads typically occur due to excessive traffic, insufficient bandwidth, or denial-of-service (DoS) attacks aimed at overwhelming network infrastructure.

The consequences of system overloads can range from minor inconveniences, such as slow application loading times, to critical failures like data loss or service outages. Identifying and diagnosing the cause of an overload often involves monitoring system performance metrics such as CPU utilization, memory usage, disk I/O, and network traffic. Mitigation strategies include optimizing software code, upgrading hardware components, increasing network bandwidth, or implementing load balancing and resource management techniques to distribute workloads more effectively. Preventive measures often involve stress testing systems before deployment and implementing robust monitoring and alerting systems to detect potential overloads early.
