Suolistosyövät, also known as colorectal cancers, refer to malignant tumors that develop in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum. These cancers typically begin as non-cancerous polyps, which are growths on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Over time, some of these polyps can become cancerous. The exact cause of colorectal cancer is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors include older age, a personal or family history of colorectal polyps or cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, and certain lifestyle choices such as a diet low in fiber and high in red and processed meats, lack of physical activity, obesity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Symptoms of colorectal cancer can vary and may not appear until the disease is advanced. Common signs include a change in bowel habits (such as diarrhea, constipation, or a change in stool consistency), rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, persistent abdominal discomfort like cramps or gas, a feeling that the bowel doesn't empty completely, and unexplained weight loss. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Screening methods like colonoscopy, fecal occult blood tests, and sigmoidoscopy are recommended for individuals, especially those over the age of 50 or those with increased risk factors. Treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer and may include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapy.
