StopThinkObservePlan, abbreviated as STOP-THINK-OBSERVE-PLAN, is a cognitive self-regulation framework used to promote deliberate decision-making in situations that may trigger impulsive actions. It is applied in education, coaching, safety training, and personal development to help individuals pause, assess, and act more thoughtfully.

The four steps work as follows: Stop interrupts automatic responses and gives time to pause. Think prompts reflection on goals, values, risks, and possible outcomes. Observe involves gathering information from the current context, including cues from others, environmental factors, and relevant data. Plan requires deciding on a course of action, weighing potential consequences, and preparing contingencies before acting.

Applications for the method are broad. In classrooms, it supports student self-regulation and problem-solving. In sports and workplaces, it aids in managing pressure, safety, and decision-making. It is also used in crisis intervention, emergency response training, and digital safety to curb impulsive online behavior. Prompts, checklists, and guided practice help embed the routine.

Variations and related concepts exist. STOP-THINK-OBSERVE-PLAN is related to other metacognitive strategies such as Stop-Think-Act and general mindfulness and executive-function training. Some versions include an additional decision or review step. The framework is valued for its simplicity and adaptability across ages and contexts, though its effectiveness depends on practice, context, and cognitive load.

Critiques note that, under extreme time pressure or high arousal, the steps may be hard to execute, and without consistent training the method can be less effective. Nonetheless, it remains a widely taught approach to promote thoughtful action.
