Stayup

Stayup, or stay-up hosiery, is a form of thigh-high stockings designed to stay in place without a garter belt. The defining feature is a stretchable silicone or elastic band at the top edge, sometimes with a lace or decorative trim, that adheres to the skin and keeps the stocking from slipping down.

Modern stayups are typically made from nylon blends such as nylon and spandex, offering a range of sheers from sheer to opaque, and may include decorative patterns or reinforced toes. They are sized similarly to other hosiery and are often sold in sets or as individual pieces.

Variants include lace-top, opaque, sheer, and fishnet styles, as well as fashion-focused designs with metallic threads or color accents. Some stayups use silicone bands around the thigh and a second inner strip to reduce rotation. The designs may range from subtle everyday wear to more elaborate options intended for special occasions or performances.

Historically, stay-up stockings gained popularity in mid-20th-century fashion as an alternative to garter belts and held a place in both everyday wear and performance costumes. The rise of did-not-slip legwear correlated with changes in lingerie aesthetics and the broader evolution of hosiery materials.

Care and wearing: to maintain the silicone grip and prolong life, follow care instructions such as gentle hand washing and air drying; avoid lotions on the band, as they can reduce adhesion. For some individuals with sensitive skin, irritation can occur if the band or materials are not compatible.

Stayup remains primarily associated with hosiery, though the term may appear in brand names or product descriptions in fashion and retail contexts.
