Startsystem

Startsystem is a German term used to describe the set of components, processes, and procedures that initiate operation of a larger system. It denotes what gets a device or construct from an inactive state into active function. The word combines Start (begin) and System (an organized arrangement). Depending on context, Startsystem is used to refer to different kinds of initiation sequences, such as boot sequences in computing, ignition and startup in vehicles, or launch sequences in aerospace.

In computing, the Startsystem refers to the boot process that brings a computer from power-on to a usable state. This includes firmware interfaces such as BIOS or UEFI, the bootloader, kernel loading, and the initialization of system services. Distinctions are often made between cold and warm boots, and there may be a separate startup manager or service manager that starts user programs after the kernel is up.

In automotive engineering, the Startsystem describes the components that start an engine, such as the battery, ignition switch, starter motor, and related circuitry. Modern implementations may include additional layers like immobilizers, electronic control units, and start-stop functionality, which shut off the engine when stationary to save fuel.

In aerospace and rocketry, the Startsystem (launch system) encompasses ground support equipment, fueling, wiring and umbilicals, countdown procedures, and the ignition sequence that leads to liftoff. It coordinates interfaces between the vehicle, launch pad, and mission control.
