It covers layout planning, stall dimensions and configurations, partitions, doors, flooring, bedding, ventilation, lighting, drainage, manure handling, and biosecurity. The objective is to provide safe, comfortable housing that supports animal health, welfare, and productive work for farmers, while complying with relevant welfare standards and building codes.

Design principles include ensuring good ventilation to control humidity and ammonia, adequate daylight and shading, temperature stability, sound management, safe access for animals and handlers, and durable, low-maintenance materials. Stall construction also considers hygiene, ease of cleaning, and manure management, including drainage and waste storage.

Stall types vary by species and management style. Horses are housed in box stalls, open or partial stalls, or tie-stall configurations, while cattle may use freestall or tie-stall systems. Materials commonly used include timber, steel, and concrete, often with rubber mats and non-slip flooring. Bedding options range from straw to wood shavings. Regular maintenance—cleaning, bedding renewal, drainage upkeep, and equipment inspection—is essential to prevent injuries and disease.

Construction projects follow planning, design, permitting, and build phases, with input from veterinarians, agricultural engineers, and contractors. Compliance involves national and regional regulations on animal welfare, environmental protection, and building codes, sometimes requiring impact assessments and fire safety measures.
