The fundamental principle of spintronics involves manipulating and detecting electron spin states. Electrons possess a quantum mechanical property called spin, which can be thought of as a tiny magnetic moment. This spin can be either "up" or "down." Spintronic devices exploit the fact that these spin states can be controlled, transported, and read out, often through magnetic materials and interfaces.

Key phenomena central to spintronics include the Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) effect and Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR). GMR, discovered in 1988, leads to a significant change in electrical resistance in layered magnetic materials when an external magnetic field is applied. TMR is a similar effect observed in magnetic tunnel junctions, where the resistance depends on the relative magnetization of the two ferromagnetic layers separated by a thin insulating barrier. These effects have already found practical applications in read heads for hard disk drives.

Future spintronic devices are expected to go beyond memory and sensing applications. Research is ongoing into spintronic transistors, logic gates, and novel memory technologies like Magnetic Random-Access Memory (MRAM), which offers non-volatility and high speed.
