Skrivebordet is a Norwegian term that can refer to two related concepts: a physical desk used for writing and work, and the computer desktop, the graphical workspace displayed on a monitor. The term highlights the dual role of a dedicated surface for tasks and the digital space used to organize files and programs.

Physically, a desk or skrivebord is a flat work surface supported by legs or a cabinet base. It may include drawers, shelves, and features for cable management. Desks are made from materials such as wood, metal, or glass and are designed to provide stability, legroom, and access to tools and documents. Writing furniture evolved in Europe during the early modern period, giving rise to forms such as the bureau and roll-top desk. In contemporary settings, height-adjustable desks and modular designs are common to accommodate different users and tasks.

Computing uses the term desktop or skrivebord in the sense of the screen-based workspace. The desktop presents files, folders, and applications as icons that can be opened, moved, or organized into windows. Desktop environments differ by operating system, with examples including Windows, macOS, and various Linux desktop managers such as GNOME and KDE. Common elements include a wallpaper, a taskbar or dock, and a system tray, all aimed at enabling quick access to software and documents.

Ergonomics and layout considerations are important for both senses of the term. For physical desks, proper height, chair alignment, and monitor position affect posture and comfort. For the computer desktop, factors such as screen brightness, text size, and organized workflows influence productivity.
