A taskbar is a graphical user interface element that provides quick access to running applications, open windows, and system controls. Positioned along an edge of the screen, it allows users to switch between tasks and launch programs from a single shared bar. Taskbars are common in many desktop operating systems and are designed to consolidate window management with widgets or status indicators.

Typical components include a Start button or equivalent app menu, a row of application buttons representing running or pinned programs, a quick-launch area for favored apps, and a notification area (system tray) that displays clock, network status, volume, and other status icons. User interactions include clicking a task button to focus or minimize a window, right-click context menus for options, and drag-and-drop to pin or unpin items. Many taskbars support auto-hide and can be moved to different screen edges.

Platform variations: In Windows, the taskbar has evolved from the classic bar with a Start button to the integrated taskbar and, in newer versions, a customizable, sometimes centered arrangement of icons. macOS uses a different concept called the Dock, which serves a similar purpose. Linux and other Unix-like desktops implement taskbar-like elements in various forms, often part of the panel or shell such as GNOME Shell or KDE Plasma, with distinct behavior and customization.

Accessibility: The taskbar is central to keyboard and mouse workflows, with shortcuts such as Alt+Tab and Win+Tab for window switching, and Win+T to focus the taskbar. It also supports accessibility features like high-contrast themes and magnification, depending on the operating system.
