Skolopendra

Skolopendra is a genus of centipedes belonging to the family Schendylidae. The name "Skolopendra" is derived from the Greek words "skolops" meaning "worm" and "pendra" meaning "foot," reflecting the centipede's segmented body. Centipedes in this genus are known for their distinctive appearance, with a long, slender body and numerous legs. They are typically found in tropical and subtropical regions, often inhabiting leaf litter, soil, and decaying vegetation.

Skolopendra centipedes are predators, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates such as insects, spiders, and other centipedes. They are known for their venomous bites, which can cause pain and swelling in humans. Despite their venom, they are generally not aggressive towards humans and will usually avoid contact.

The genus Skolopendra includes several species, with the most well-known being Skolopendra morsitans, commonly known as the European common centipede. This species is native to Europe and North Africa and is one of the largest centipedes found in these regions. Other notable species include Skolopendra subtropica, found in the southern United States, and Skolopendra polyacantha, native to Australia.
