Silmapidamise

Silmapidamise is an Estonian term that refers to the act of a bird of prey, such as a hawk, falcon, or eagle, hovering in the air while searching for prey. This behavior is characterized by the bird maintaining a relatively stationary position against the wind, often by making small adjustments to its wings and tail. The purpose of silmapidamise is to gain a clear vantage point over the ground below, allowing the raptor to spot potential food sources, typically small mammals like voles or mice, or sometimes reptiles and insects.

The effectiveness of silmapidamise depends on several factors, including wind conditions, the bird's eyesight, and the type of terrain. Open fields, meadows, and the edges of forests are common areas where birds engage in this hunting technique. Once prey is sighted, the bird will typically dive rapidly from its hovering position to capture it. This hunting strategy is energy-efficient for raptors as it allows them to survey a large area without expending excessive energy in continuous flight. The term is also sometimes used more broadly to describe the focused, watchful gaze of any animal.
