Shuttlar

Shuttlar is a fictional term used in world-building and speculative fiction to describe a small, nocturnal mammal-like species native to the temperate forests of the imagined continent of Verdanis. The name is commonly used in field guides within its setting and is treated as a distinct taxonomic group within the fictional family Shuttlaridae.

Description and morphology

Shuttlar individuals typically measure 12 to 18 cm in body length, with a tail of about 15 to 25 cm, and weigh roughly 90 to 180 grams. They have soft, dense fur that can vary in color from brown to gray or olive, with a lighter ventral coat. A defining feature is a patagial membrane extending between the forelimbs and hindlimbs, which enables controlled gliding between trees. They possess rounded hind-foot pads that aid in grip when climbing.

Habitat and ecology

Shuttlar inhabit mixed deciduous and evergreen forests, often using tree hollows and abandoned cavities for nesting. They are adaptable foragers, feeding on fruit, seeds, nectar, and small invertebrates. In the wild, they form small social groups and rely on coordinated vocalizations and scent-marking to maintain group cohesion.
