It is typically understood as a deliberate or habitual avoidance rather than mere forgetfulness, and it can range from neglecting low-priority tasks to skipping essential obligations.

The term derives from the verb shirk, meaning to dodge or evade. In everyday use, shireness connotes a conscious choice to minimize required effort, often despite the ability to perform the task.
