Serged

Serged is the past participle and adjective form used in sewing to describe fabric edges or seams finished with a serger, also called an overlock machine. When fabric is serged, the edge is trimmed and enclosed in a thread overlock that helps prevent fraying and provides a neat, flexible finish.

A serger works by using multiple thread spools and usually one or more cutting blades to trim the edge as it stitches. The result is an edge finished with an overcast stitch that encloses the fabric edge. Common configurations include a 3-thread overlock (typically two needles and one looper) for lightweight fabrics and a 4-thread overlock (two needles and two loopers) for a stronger seam that also provides edge finishing. Some machines can also produce rolled hems or narrow hems by adjusting tension and stitch width.

Serging is widely used on knit fabrics and a variety of woven fabrics because it creates a durable, stretchy edge that resists unraveling. It is valued for speed and efficiency, especially in garment construction and finishing. On some projects, serged edges may be left visible on the inside of the garment, or combined with additional seam finishes for a cleaner exterior appearance. For fabrics prone to curling or fraying, serging offers a practical, integrated solution, though in areas requiring precise topstitching or a particular aesthetic, other finishing methods may be preferred.
