It primarily refers to designs or components that can be automatically translated into a physical implementation, typically within an integrated circuit (IC). This concept is most commonly encountered in the field of digital electronics and hardware description languages (HDLs) such as Verilog or VHDL.

When a digital circuit is described using an HDL, the code itself is a textual representation of the desired functionality. A synthesizable design is one that can be processed by a synthesis tool. This tool then analyzes the HDL code and converts it into a netlist, which is a list of logic gates and their interconnections. This netlist can then be further processed by place-and-route tools to create the physical layout of the circuit on an actual semiconductor chip.
