Self-purchase refers to the act of acquiring goods or services intended for the purchaser’s own use, rather than for resale, distribution, or third-party fulfillment. It is a broad term that can apply to individuals, households, businesses, and public institutions.

In consumer markets, self-purchase is the typical mode of purchasing for personal consumption. In corporate and organizational settings, self-purchase can denote purchases made by departments or employees using organizational funds for internal needs, corporate assets, or operational requirements, subject to internal controls and procurement policies. It contrasts with procurement on behalf of customers or third parties or with supplier outsourcing arrangements.

Motivations for self-purchase include convenience, speed, control over quality and timing, privacy, and the avoidance of middlemen. It can enable direct access to suppliers or more favorable pricing through bulk buying, but it can also lead to higher risks of fraud, maverick spending, or conflicts of interest if approvals and spend governance are weak.

Effective governance involves defined spend thresholds, competitive bidding where applicable, proper authorization, segregation of duties, and regular audits. For tax and accounting, self-purchases may require proper recording of expenses, asset capitalization, depreciation, or VAT treatment, depending on jurisdiction and purpose.

Legal and ethical considerations include related-party transactions, self-dealing prohibitions for officers or directors, and compliance with procurement, anti-corruption, and consumer protection laws. Transparency and documentation are commonly recommended to mitigate risks.
