The work is typically offered for a fixed duration, ranging from several weeks to a few months, after which the contract ends.

Typical tasks vary by sector. In agriculture and horticulture, workers may perform harvesting, pruning, planting, greenhouse cultivation, and packing. In tourism and hospitality, seasonal workers fill roles in hotels, restaurants, events, and related services. In forestry, fisheries, and logistics, activities align with peak demand, such as processing, loading and unloading, or other short-term operational tasks.

Employment arrangements and rights usually involve fixed-term contracts or employment through temporary staffing agencies. Wages are typically governed by national minimum wage laws or sectoral agreements, and working hours can be long, including weekends and holidays. Housing and transportation may be provided by the employer. In many countries non-nationals require work permits or visas, while workers from the European Union or European Economic Area may have different mobility rights. Equal treatment under labor law is a concern in some jurisdictions, depending on local regulations and enforcement.

Challenges facing seizoenarbeid include income variability, job insecurity, language barriers, and potential exposure to exploitative practices if oversight is weak.
