Seiso

Seiso, meaning cleanliness or to clean in Japanese, is the third component of the 5S workplace organization methodology, alongside Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in order), Seiketsu (Standardize), and Shitsuke (Sustain). In practice, Seiso refers to cleaning the workplace and its equipment as well as inspecting for signs of wear or abnormality. The goal is to create a safe, organized, and efficient environment where problems are visible.

Application of Seiso involves regular cleaning and inspection routines for floors, machines, tools, and work surfaces. Cleaning is seen as a diagnostic activity: abnormal noises, leaks, worn parts, or misalignments are detected and addressed. Tasks are standardized and scheduled, often supported by checklists and visual controls. Roles are assigned, and cleanliness becomes a daily habit that supports the execution of other tasks.

History and context: The 5S framework originated in Japan as part of the Toyota Production System and has since been adopted worldwide in manufacturing and service sectors to improve productivity, safety, and quality. Although rooted in industrial settings, Seiso is applied in offices, hospitals, and laboratories as part of lean management and continuous improvement programs.

Impact and considerations: When implemented with training and management support, Seiso contributes to safer workplaces, reduced downtime, longer equipment life, and better problem detection. Critics caution that if treated as mere housekeeping or audited superficially, it can become performative rather than leading to sustained improvements; success relies on integration with standardization and ongoing kaizen.
