Sebum-regulating refers to approaches, products, and therapies aimed at modulating the production or behavior of sebum, the oily substance produced by sebaceous glands. Regulating sebum is a common goal in managing oily skin and sebum-related conditions such as acne. Sebum production is influenced by hormonal signals, genetics, age, and environmental factors, and tends to be higher during adolescence and in certain hormonal states.

Topical strategies commonly used to regulate sebum include retinoids (such as adapalene and tretinoin), which help normalize follicular keratinization and may reduce sebum production over time. Exfoliants like salicylic acid and azelaic acid can decrease surface oil and improve pore function. Niacinamide is believed to help balance skin oiliness and offers anti-inflammatory benefits. Zinc-based formulations may influence sebaceous gland activity and have antimicrobial effects, contributing to oil control and reduced irritation. Benzoyl peroxide is frequently used for acne and can have drying effects that indirectly lessen apparent oiliness.

Systemic and hormonal options are used in more persistent or hormonally driven cases. Isotretinoin, a retinoid taken systemically, can markedly reduce sebum production by shrinking sebaceous glands. Hormonal therapies, including certain combined oral contraceptives and anti-androgen agents (such as spironolactone), may decrease androgen-driven sebum production in appropriate patients.

Safety, expectations, and individual response vary. Potential drawbacks include skin irritation, dryness, and photosensitivity with some agents. Some treatments require medical oversight, especially systemic therapies. Regular use of sunscreen and guidance on product layering can improve tolerability and outcomes.
