Common configurations include theater or auditorium seating with rows facing a stage; banquet or reception seating with round or long tables; classroom or conference seating with desks or tables in rows; and arena or stadium seating with elevated tiers. Mixed formats are used for conferences and festivals to accommodate presentations, work areas, and lounges.

Planning involves capacity calculations, sightlines, and egress routes. Seatings may be assigned, with tickets specifying a seat and row, or general admission, where seats are chosen upon entry. A seating plan, floor plan, or seating chart helps staff locate seats, manage groups, and handle accessibility needs. Technology such as ticketing systems and crowd-management software can support dynamic seating and late changes.

Accessibility and safety considerations require provision of accessible seating, companion seats, and clear paths to exits. Venues must comply with jurisdictional codes and guidelines for emergency evacuation, fire safety, and inclusive access. Seating management also covers reserved seating etiquette, no-show policies, and crowd flow during peak times.

For dining contexts, seating describes how guests are allocated tables or booths and how service is organized. In both dining and performance settings, effective seating plans balance capacity, revenue, and attendee experience while adapting to room geometry and special needs.
