Screwgates

Screwgates are a type of karabiner or carabiner, a metal loop with a sprung gate, used in climbing and other activities where secure attachment is important. The defining feature of a screwgate is its threaded locking mechanism. When the gate is closed, a sleeve that surrounds the gate opening can be screwed down against the karabiner body. This prevents the gate from accidentally opening. To open a screwgate, the sleeve must be manually unscrewed.

Screwgates offer a higher level of security than non-locking karabiners, making them suitable for critical applications such as belaying, anchoring, and connecting to ropes. The locking mechanism provides a safeguard against the gate opening unintentionally due to forces from climbing, falling objects, or equipment movement. They are commonly made from aluminum alloy or steel.

The design of screwgates varies, with some featuring a simpler threaded sleeve while others incorporate more advanced locking systems. The reliability of the screwgate depends on proper usage and maintenance. It is important to ensure the sleeve is fully screwed down before loading the karabiner and to keep the threads clean and free of debris. Regular inspection for wear and tear is also recommended. While generally very secure, improper use, such as cross-loading or insufficient tightening of the screw sleeve, can compromise their effectiveness.
