Screeningu, a term used in several languages, denotes the systematic application of tests, measurements, or inspections to identify individuals or items that may have a particular characteristic or condition, often before symptoms are evident. In public health, screening aims to detect disease early to enable timely intervention. The concept also appears in security, employment, and research contexts, where screening serves to filter out risks or nonconforming subjects.

Medical screening examples include programs for cancer detection (mammography, colon cancer screening with stool tests or colonoscopy, cervical cancer screening with Pap tests or HPV testing), newborn screening for metabolic or genetic disorders, and infectious disease screening (such as HIV or hepatitis testing) in at‑risk populations. Nonmedical screening encompasses security checks at airports, pre‑employment or fitness tests, and environmental screening for contaminants or allergens. Across settings, screening is intended to be rapid, scalable, and acceptable to those screened.

Key design principles emphasize choosing a well‑defined target group, using tests with acceptable sensitivity and specificity, and providing confirmatory testing for positive results. A screening program should balance potential benefits, such as reduced morbidity, against harms, including false positives, overdiagnosis, anxiety, and cost. Informed consent, privacy, and equitable access are important ethical considerations, as screening programs can reflect and reinforce societal disparities if not thoughtfully implemented.

Historically, mass screening emerged in the 20th century as a public health tool, guided by evidence from pilot studies and controlled trials. Contemporary guidelines are issued by national health agencies and international bodies to harmonize practices and keep up with new tests and technologies.
