It involves performing a series of repetitions of an exercise, followed by a period of rest, and then repeating the series. This structure is the basis of most resistance training programs.

The number of repetitions within a set is often tailored to specific training goals. For instance, lower repetition ranges (e.g., 1-5 reps) are typically associated with building maximal strength, while moderate ranges (e.g., 8-12 reps) are often used for muscle hypertrophy (growth). Higher repetition ranges (e.g., 15-20+ reps) are generally employed for muscular endurance.

The rest period between sets is also a crucial variable. Shorter rest periods tend to challenge the cardiovascular system and can contribute to muscular endurance and metabolic stress, while longer rest periods allow for greater recovery, enabling the lifter to handle heavier loads or perform more repetitions in subsequent sets, which is beneficial for strength and power development.
